Protect Yourself from Mosquitos and Ticks

Whether you work or play outdoors in the summertime, you are a prime target for mosquitos and ticks.
Aside from being irritating, insect pests can carry bacteria, parasites and viruses, such as West Nile virus, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which could make humans sick. It’s important to protect yourself.
The first step is to take some preventive measures to avoid bites in the first place.
- Reduce the number of mosquitos in a particular area by removing standing water where they reproduce.
- Keep tall grass and brush cut.
- Wear repellants containing 20-50% DEET when outdoors.
- Tuck pants into socks or boots to keep ticks from getting under clothing.
- Check your entire body, including hair, underarms and groin, after exposure to tick-prone areas.
- Wear light-colored clothing to make ticks easier to spot.
Sometimes pesticides may be necessary to control these insects, but always be sure to follow the label directions when using these products.
