MSU names new head of ag econ
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Mississippi State University recently named Steve Turner as the new head of the Department of Agricultural Economics.
Turner came to MSU from the University of Georgia where he was an associate professor and undergraduate coordinator in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He assumed his duties at MSU Aug. 1.
"Dr. Turner comes highly recommended to us, and we have utmost confidence in his ability to lead this important department in the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine," said Vance Watson, interim vice president of this MSU division.
Turner was born in Atlanta and grew up on his father's poultry-cattle farm in Lumpkin County, Ga. He earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Mercer University, a master's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Georgia and a doctorate in the same from Virginia Tech. His research has concentrated on marketing and finance, with emphasis on the green and livestock sectors along with the futures and option markets.
At MSU, he will be responsible for leading the academic, research and outreach efforts related to agricultural economics.
Turner and his wife, Jenny, have a daughter and a son.
