Agriculture commissioner to address MSU group
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- An organization devoted to the advancement of agriculture will hear from Mississippi’s top agriculture official at an April 18 event.
Dr. Lester Spell, commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, will be the keynote speaker at the Mississippi State University Gamma Sigma Delta chapter’s annual awards and initiation banquet. The 6 p.m. event will be held at the Leo W. Seal M Club on the MSU campus.
Spell, who is serving his third term as Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture at MSU in 1965 and a doctorate of veterinary medicine at Auburn University in 1968.
“Dr. Spell is a sixth generation Mississippian whose family has been part of the state’s agriculture industry for almost 140 years,” said Vance Watson, MSU vice president for agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine. “He was very active in 4-H, which helped lead him to Mississippi State for his pre-veterinary training.”

Gamma Sigma Delta is an international honor society dedicated to recognizing excellence in agriculture and related sciences, including forestry, natural resources, landscape architecture, human ecology and veterinary medicine. Its membership includes university undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in agriculture and related sciences, as well as alumni who have provided outstanding service to agriculture.
