CVM department head to review federal grants
MISSISSIPPI STATE – A department head in Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has been selected to review research grants for the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Stephen Pruett, head of CVM’s Department of Basic Sciences, is one of a select group of scientists serving as members of NIH’s Innate Immunity and Inflammation Study Section. Members are selected for their achievements in their discipline, research accomplishments and publications in scientific journals.
As a member of this group, Pruett will review research grants submitted to NIH by scientists from all over the country.
“We score the grants based on scientific merit,” Pruett said. “NIH makes funding decisions based on the score we scientists give the grants.”
Membership on a study section requires a commitment of time and energy but provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort said Dr. Toni Scarpa, director for NIH’s Center for Scientific Review.
“Mature judgment, objectivity and the ability to work effectively in a group is needed to participate in a study section,” Scarpa said. “These are all qualities we believe Dr. Pruett will bring to this important task.”
Pruett’s service in the section began on July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2014.
Pruett earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a doctorate in immunology from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He also studied immunology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and immunotoxicology at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Before joining MSU, he held teaching and research positions at several universities and served as acting head and professor for the Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy at the LSU Health Sciences Center.
Pruett is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the American Association of Immunologists, the Society of Toxicology (Immunotoxicology Specialty Section), and the American College of Toxicology.
