MSU camp for teens combines food, science
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Mississippi State University will hold two camps this summer to teach teens about the science behind the foods they eat.
MSU’s Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion is sponsoring two Culinology for Teens camps for incoming ninth- through 12th-grade students. Both camps will blend culinary arts and food science.
Culinology for Teens I will be held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. July 12-16 on MSU’s campus. It is a beginner course for teens, giving them hands-on food discovery experiences. Each day students will learn basic culinary techniques while learning the science behind the foods they enjoy. Campers will learn about proper knife skills, basic cooking methods, how to make stocks and sauces and many other topics.
Culinology for Teens II will be held from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. July 19-23. To participate, campers must have completed Culinology for Teens I. The camp builds upon the lessons learned in the first camp. They will further their knife skills, learn more complex cooking methods and prepare and taste different cuisines from around the world.
Jason Behrends, assistant Extension and research professor in the department, will lead the activities.
“These camps are the perfect blend of fun with food and science,” Behrends said. “The students will learn everything from pastry and soup making to preparing stocks and sauces.”
The first camp is $350, and the second is $300. The fee for the first camp also covers the cost for the textbook used for both camps. To register, visit http://www.fsnhp.msstate.edu/events/culinology/index.html or call Behrends at (662) 325-0485. Space is limited.
