Alliance field day set for Jan. 19
CARRIERE, Miss. -- The Small Farm Training Center will host the Alliance of Sustainable Farms field day on Jan. 19 in Hancock County.
Farm operators Terry and Elicia Sheldon, along with student apprentices who live and work at the center, will show attendees their techniques for growing organic produce.
Topics include turmeric, organic techniques for growing blueberries, and uses of floating row cover to provide shade protection and prevent frost damage and insect invasion. Attendees will see demonstrations related to seedling mixes, growing spring transplants, soil blocks vs. plastic cell packs, and application timing of postgermination compost tea.
The field day is free, but preregistration is required. Onsite check-in begins at 10 a.m. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. Participants will receive free melon seeds.
The Small Farm Training Center is located at 31492 Anner Road in Carriere, about 20 minutes from Picayune.
