Game bird workshop teaches management
SHANNON, Miss. -- Landowners working to improve game bird habitat can sign up for Feb. 28 and March 1 weekend events that provide practical information for property management.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service is hosting the turkey and quail management social and workshop in Shannon, Mississippi.
The game bird weekend begins at 6 p.m. with a Friday night social that includes a meal and a discussion of the current status of turkey and quail populations in the state. Adam Butler with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will provide this update.
A panel discussion and Q&A session featuring biologists and representatives from conservation organizations and agencies will follow the update.
On Saturday, the workshop begins with breakfast at 8 a.m. and will cover topics such as habitat management, predator management and landowner assistance programs. Field demonstrations will include trapping techniques, timber management and prescribed fire practices.
Weather permitting, organizers will conduct a prescribed burn during the workshop. Lunch is also provided.
“This event was a tremendous success when we held it in Starkville last year, and we plan to rotate it across the state, with next year’s event probably held in south Mississippi,” said James Callicutt, Extension waterfowl and upland game bird specialist in the MSU Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The event will be held at Southwind, 200A Bynum Avenue in Shannon. There is a $35 cost for each event.
